It was once believed that online pirating and torrent sites would be the end of TV, but now it maybe from another place, the online media streaming networks like Netflix ( NASDAQ: NFLX). Recently, Netflix has been threatening the TV giants such as Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) HBO, which was known for its commercial free series where viewers can hear people cursing and other things not on other stations, but now Neflix can do all of this and it's cheaper. According to Business Insider, Netflix's real ambition isn't to compete with HBO's program, but to become better and faster than it. Not to destroy HBO, but traditional television instead. Netflix's CEO Reed Hasting says:"Linear TV has been on an amazing 50-year run. Internet TV is starting to grow. Clearly over the next 20 years Internet TV is going to replace linear TV. And so I think everyone is scrambling to figure out how do they do great apps, how do they things like "Noggin" which are fantastic. That will just keep getting built up and so it's a transition into figuring out the Internet. And the way people do that is to get involved with us, with our competitors to try to start to learn what are the new patterns and modalities because Internet TV is the way that people will consume video in the future."HBO recently launched HBO Now, which is a lot like Netflix for $14.99. Now, HBO not only has to compete with Netflix, but also websites like Hulu and Amazon. HBO has a long road ahead of it. Not to mention Netflix is a pioneer in Internet streaming, which put major video stores out of business and now they're gunning for TV itself. With its stocks steadily going up because of its original programming such as "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards," Netflix seems to be making the dream of killing TV a reality.
